My choices in hair products are limited for two reasons—1.) I have wild, curly hair, and 2.) I color my hair regularly. I have to make sure that the hair products I use are curl- and color-friendly. I sifted through dozens of hair products this month and found five to my liking.
1. NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil
This French pharmacy brand arrived in the Philippine market in September. When the Beauty Ministers and I were given a bag of Nuxe items at our recent Makeup Party, my eyes immediately went to the golden bottle of Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil, which happens to be a bestseller in Paris. It’s a multipurpose oil that can be used for the face, body, and hair. Of course I immediately used it as a hair treatment! I applied about 15 sprays all over my mane, mostly on the ends after taking a shower. Two words: liquid gold! I rarely use cliché superlatives to describe a beauty product, but this one is amazing. After the first use, my hair was ultra soft, easy to manage, and looked exactly how I want my hair to look on a daily basis—defined ringlets, tamed tendrils but not weighed down, and hydrated but not greasy. NUXE easily made it to my list of favorite hair products of all time.
2. Goody Ouchless Cushion Brush
Before testing this product, there were only three hair styling tools that ever worked well for my curls—a wide-toothed comb, a paddle brush, and a tangle teaser (a.k.a. tangle fix). I finally found a new curl-friendly brush to add to my list—Goody’s Ouchless Cushion Brush. It has “comfort flex cushion and bristles” that gave me tangle-free styling. The size is perfect for travel, so I can leave my heavy paddle brush at home. I wouldn’t use this one for daily use, but it’s definitely my new travel brush.
3. Paul Mitchell Curls Full Circle Leave-In Treatment
This American brand was recommended by my hairstylist cousin, Nicole Mercado. While the Curls Frizz-Fighting Shampoo didn’t work well for me (it left my hair dry and limp), the Frizz-Free Curl Therapy performed better. I’m not so fond of the pasty scent, but the creamy formula helped define my curls and tame the frizz.
4. Goody Slide-Proof Headbands
I love Goody’s headbands. I’ve tried so many styles and they always do the job well. These slide-proof elastics cling well on my curly hair and stay put all day. I believe girls with super straight, slippery hair will appreciate this headband as well because of the rubbery, slide-proof grip.
5. L’Oréal Professionnel Série Expert Color 10-in-1 Perfecting Multipurpose Spray
I got this from the launch of L’Oréal Professionnel’s V Look in September. I expected a watery consistency, but instead the bottle sprayed out a creamy leave-on treatment. The label says it’s good for color-treated hair. After towel-drying my hair, I applied about 12-15 sprays on the lower half of my mane, hand-styled the springy curls, and let it dry on its own. The result: soft, tamed curls. While I often wear my curls big and loud, I sometimes sport a tame, weighed down version, and this product does the trick. I didn’t get the extra shine promised, but my hair became softer and more fragrant.
